Children's Book Author
Read her first book, "You're My Boo," and you will see Kate Dopirak's love and enthusiasm for her family immediately come to life.
A mother of two, Joey, 11, and Bobby, 9, Dopirak describes the book as "a love letter to my boys." In the book, Mama Fox shows her love for her "Boo" in fun rhymes and short, catchy phrases. In the end, the book is really about unconditional love.
"My sons inspire most of what I write," she said. "I love sharing this writing journey with my husband and sons. Brainstorming new story ideas, reading drafts of manuscripts, discussing revisions, commiserating about rejections, celebrating sales-It's all better thanks to them."
A certified K-6 school teacher, reading specialist and assistant regional advisor for the Western Pennsylvania chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), she earned her master's degree in education and reading specialist certification from Duquesne University.
"I loved my time at Duquesne. It is also very special to me because my husband and I got married in its beautiful chapel."
A former elementary school teacher, Dopirak quickly fell in love with children's books. She began writing and after attending a SCBWI conference became more serious about her endeavors. She met her agent through SCBWI, who eventually found success with publisher Simon & Schuster. Today, Dopirak visits libraries, speaks to parents, talks at schools and works with Reading is Fundamental and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, spreading her joy of reading. She has been writing for ten years, but "You're My Boo" is her first published book.
"It is really exciting to hear from people I don't know," Dopirak said. "For people to take the time, go onto my Web site at 11 p.m, and compliment the book. This means so much to me."
Dopirak's next book, "Snuggle Bunny," is now available for pre-order from Cartwheel/Scholastic. "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Car" an automotive twist on the classic, will be published by Beach Lane Books/Simon & Schuster, in 2018.
