From the Second World War to the cultural revolutions of 1968, American Catholics invoked conscience rights against authorities in the state and in the church. This Catholic turn to conscience had radical effects on American society, influencing not only the broader world of Christianity, but also such disparate arenas as government, law, healthcare, and the very moral vocabulary of American culture.
