Biography

David W. Seybert is a Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Duquesne University.  He earned a B.A. degree from Bloomsburg State College in 1972 and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Cornell University in 1976. Following the completion of a three-year postdoctoral research appointment at Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Seybert joined the faculty of Duquesne University in 1979.  Over the years, Dr. Seybert’s research interests have extended from mechanistic studies of mammalian enzymes that catalyze biological oxidations to the role of lipid peroxidation in human disease and aging.  He was appointed as Interim Dean of the Bayer School in 2000 and Dean in 2002. At Duquesne, he has served as Chair of the Organizing Committee for the 2003 conference “Stem Cell Research:  Science, Ethics and Religion” and as co Chair of the 2008 Rachel Carson Legacy Conference “Green Chemistry: Solutions for a Healthy Economy.” Dr. Seybert has also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Bishop Canevin High School and currently serves on the STEM Advisory Board of the Carnegie Science Center.

Research Interests or Exprtise

Our research interests focus on the general theme of biological oxidations and oxidative stress, with particular interest in defining mechanisms by which lipid peroxidation byproducts result in structural and functional modification of proteins and other biomolecules.  Research in the laboratory ranges from model in vitro systems to studies that correlate antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation biomarkers in humans.  We also have an ongoing interest in the study of the cytochrome P-450 dependent steroid hydroxylases and the protein-protein interactions essential for steroidogenic electron transport among flavoproteins, iron-sulfur proteins, and heme proteins in these systems.
