Biography

Janet K. Astle, B.S., Pharmacy, Ed.D. currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Student Services for the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy.

In her role as Assistant Dean, Dr. Astle oversees areas dedicated to student support services, professional student organizations, government relations, admissions, and advisement. In addition to her responsibilities to the Office of Student Services, Janet Astle serves as coursemaster for the Continuous Professional Development series of courses that run throughout the professional phase of the doctor of pharmacy curriculum. She currently serves as advisor to the student chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society.

Janet Astle earned her B.S. degree in Pharmacy from Duquesne University in 1980. Upon graduation, she worked in community pharmacy practice for Thrift Drug Company and provided consultation services for a skilled nursing care facility. She also researched, authored, and produced 30 distinct state pharmacy law manuals for the corporate entity. In 1996, Dr. Astle accepted a full-time position with the School of Pharmacy at Duquesne. Most recently, she served as its Director of Experiential Education.

Janet Astle successfully defended her dissertation entitled "Identification of Desirable Pharmacy Preceptor Characteristics and Behaviors: A Qualitative Content Analysis Approach" and received the Doctor of Education degree in Instructional Leadership in August of 2012 from the Duquesne University School of Education. She is the 2008 recipient of the School of Pharmacy Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association Pharmacist of the Year Award.

    Funding will be used to continue to develop the Introductory Pharmacy Practice III course, which provides students in the third professional year of the pharmacy program with experience relative to public health and wellness. The overarching goal of the course is to advance safe and effective medication use among underserved populations in the greater Pittsburgh area. This is accomplished through community engagement via the delivery of point-of-care screenings held in conjunction with local food banks, naloxone rescue training and outreach efforts. and educational programming relative to safe medication use and drug abuse awareness.
