Ask Memorable Questions

One of the last parts of the interview will allow you to ask some question of the interviewer.  This is your opportunity to determine if the position and company are the right fit for you.

  • Don’t ever say, “I don’t have any questions”.  This may be interpreted as disinterest in the position. 
  • Prepare questions ahead of time and write them down.  Bring your list of questions to the interview.  Let the interviewer know you have prepared some questions.
  • Use the information you gather through research to help you formulate questions specific to the company and position.
Sample questions to ask in an interview:
  • What does the typical day in this position entail?
  • What are the most important qualities a person needs to succeed in this job?
  • What challenges might I encounter on the job?
  • In my first 6 months on the job, what would be the top priorities for me to accomplish?
  • Describe the training for the position and opportunities for continued professional development.
  • How is performance evaluated? how frequently?
  • Are there opportunities for promotion and advancement within the organization?
  • What is the typical career path for this job?
and these:
  • What do you enjoy most about working for XYZ company?
  • What do you consider to be the organization’s strengths and weaknesses?
  • Describe the work environment.
  • If you could change one thing about the organization what would it be?
  • I read a recent press release on your web site about your new ABC initiative, tell me more about  . . .
  • For supervisor:  What is your supervisory/ management style?
