Internships for Credit

The University grants credits for an internship when it meets the University's criteria for internship credit (a professional or pre-professional position) and when it fits into the student's curriculum.  In addition, students must meet specific University requirements, such as GPA and student status standards, to qualify for internship credits. Virtual internships are subject to review based specific criteria.

If a student decides to register for internship credit, the employer has certain defined responsibilities to follow in order to participate in Duquesne's Internship Program.

  • The employer must provide a job description on company letterhead or via email to the Internship Coordinator at, who determines if the internship is credit worthy. If the position has been posted on Handshake as an internship, then it has already been approved as an internship for credit.
  • The employer must agree that the undergraduate student will work a minimum of 120 hours throughout the semester and a graduate student 150 hours, based on a 3-credit course registration.
  • The employer will complete a portion of the Learning Contract which is also completed by the student and the faculty sponsor who oversees the student's reflection and learning. The Learning Contract provides contact information but, more importantly, ensures that the student, employer, and faculty sponsor understand and accept the duties and responsibilities the student will perform. The student obtains the learning contract from the Internship Coordinator when s/he meets to review the syllabus.
  • The employer must complete a mid-term evaluation and a final evaluation by the date indicated on each form. Faculty sponsors review and take the evaluations into consideration when determining the student's grade; therefore it is important that the employer complete the evaluations in a timely manner. Evaluations are emailed to the intern's supervisor from the Internship Coordinator.

If you have any questions about the Internship Program, please do not hesitate to email the Internship Coordinator at or call 412-396-4332.
