Explore Your Interests

Unsure if you’re on the right career path? Take steps to discover and appreciate your interests and how they relate to careers and the world of work.

Set aside job titles and industries. What drives you? Think about past courses and experiences that have been enjoyable, interesting, or rewarding. What is that thread that connects these preferences?

Online Career Interest Assessments

The Center for Career Development provides two online assessments that can help you explore careers that relate to your interests.

O*Net Interest Profiler

The O*NET Interest Profiler helps you decide what kinds of careers you might want to explore. You can easily complete the questions in approximately 30 - 40 minutes and receive a report that assesses your interests. The report will identify certain occupations and fields based on your answers and help you understand if they are a good fit for you.

Strong Interest Inventory

The Strong Interest Inventory® can also help you discover potential careers based on your unique interests. Contact your Career Consultant via email or by appointment (through Handshake) prior to taking the assessment to discuss its appropriateness and potential value to your situation.

The Strong Interest Inventory, which takes about 30-45 minutes to complete, compares your interests with those of people who are satisfied in their occupations. The underlying premise of the Strong is that if you share many common interests with persons in a certain occupation, then you too are more likely to enjoy that type of work as well.

After completing the Strong, you will meet with your career consultant one-on-one to review and discuss the results. Your career consultant will assist you in planning your next steps to explore the occupational suggestions provided by the assessment.
