The family of the late Thomas Jahanian have provided Duquesne University a gift of $250,000 to establish an endowed scholarship in his honor. Thomas, who passed away last September, is the son of Farnam Jahanian, the president of Carnegie Mellon University, and Tris Jahanian, a software and systems expert and entrepreneur who also is an active volunteer in numerous Pittsburgh organizations.
Thomas had been enrolled at Duquesne University, taking classes aligned with his interests in music, philosophy, and international relations. In honor of Thomas's passions, the scholarship his family created will support students with demonstrated financial need who are pursuing study in one of those areas.
The middle of three children, Thomas was described by friends as charming and compassionate, a person who relished in connecting with others, through philosophy, music, political banter, or anything that would inspire a great conversation.
"It brings our whole family a great deal of comfort to honor Thomas's memory through this commitment to Duquesne University," said Farnam Jahanian. "Thomas was so happy at Duquesne, where he nurtured a love of learning and felt so welcomed by the community. He forged deep friendships with many students and was inspired by his faculty mentors in international relations and philosophy. Paying tribute to his passion for knowledge and sharing it with others through this scholarship is profoundly meaningful."
In addition to his parents, Thomas is survived by his older brother, Daniel, and younger sister, Sara, as well as many extended family members.
"The deep generosity and care shown by the Jahanians in honoring their son through this gift to Duquesne is very much appreciated," said Duquesne University President Ken Gormley. "While nothing can replace Thomas's joyful presence on our campus, this gift will help a great many future students, extending a positive legacy by creating opportunity for others."
