Documentary about Pope's Visit Wins Telly Award
A documentary about Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the U.S. in April 2008, produced by 13 Duquesne University journalism and multimedia students, has received a Telly Award as an outstanding documentary.
Under the direction of Dr. Dennis Woytek, assistant professor, and instructor/WTAE-TV newscaster Mike Clark, students created Christ Our Hope: The Pilgrimage of the Pope, a 52-minute DVD about Pope Benedict’s trips to Washington, D.C., and New York City. These DU students comprised the only college TV crew among 600 reporters from around the world to receive the coveted credentials to videotape the pope’s American visit.
This is the fourth Telly Award received by professors and students in Duquesne’s journalism and multimedia arts program in recent years. A film depicting a cross-country trip by students, led by instructor James Vota and including then-graduate assistant Nick Sinagra, who has relies on a ventilator-equipped wheelchair because of spinal muscular atrophy, received two Telly awards this year in the entertainment and low-budget categories.
Woytek also received a Telly in 2007 for documentary about a nine-day pilgrimage of Pittsburghers to Medjugorje, where the Blessed Virgin Mary reportedly appeared to six children and has been appearing to them on a regular basis ever since. He previously won a Telly for his travel program, Pennsylvania Adventures, in 1991.
The Telly Awards, founded in 1979, are a prestigious distinction honoring outstanding local, regional and cable TV commercials and programs, video and film productions.
DVDs of Christ Our Hope are available by contacting the Department of Journalism and Multimedia Arts at 412.396.1311. Cost is $20.
