DU Pharmacy School Partners With St. Barnabas, Bethlehem Haven

St. Barnabas Health System and Bethlehem Haven have joined the Academic Partners Program in Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy.

“The mission of the program is to connect the resources of the Mylan School of Pharmacy to partner organizations to improve partner, patient and organizational outcomes, and in turn, enhance the pharmacy profession,” said Dr. Tom Mattei, associate dean of academic programs and associate professor of pharmacy practice. “In addition, the nearly 20 partnerships provide the school with an expansion of its clinical teaching sites.”

Bethlehem Haven serves homeless women by providing medical care, housing and meals. The School of Pharmacy hopes to assist Bethlehem Haven in providing a continuum of care that leads these women toward self-sufficiency.

St. Barnabas is composed of a medical center, two skilled-care nursing homes, an assisted living facility and three independent living facilities that focus on providing primary care services, long-term care services for the economically underprivileged with chronic diseases or disabilities, as well as residential services for the elderly, and home care and companion services for the homebound. Through the partnership, the pharmacy school will be responsible for pharmacy care and clinical education at St. Barnabas.

“This service is a perfect fit for our residents, their families and our staff,” said Angie Borgo, St. Barnabas Nursing Home administrator. “We’re gaining additional knowledge about drug interactions for specific residents and we’re very optimistic that, armed with this additional knowledge, we can help improve each residents’ health and wellness.”
