Duquesne’s Greek Life Office and Director Honored by Red Cross
Rebecca Jamrozik and the Office of Greek Life were honored by the American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Alleghenies Region, at its June 7 annual meeting in Johnstown.
Jamrozik, director of Greek life, honor societies and professional organizations, was on hand to receive the University Spirit Award from the Red Cross Blood Services. In presenting the award, Red Cross officials cited that the Office of Greek Life’s successful blood drives are due to Jamrozik’s leadership.
“I feel that by allowing our students to help others through blood donation, we are teaching them the true meaning behind the Duquesne motto, ‘It is the Spirit that gives life,’” Jamrozik said. “By enabling our students to become blood donors, they are providing blood to people who, without that blood, may lose their life. This can be very profound for a college student.”
Under Jamrozik’s direction, the Greek life office coordinates two blood drives each year, inspiring the University’s fraternities and sororities to meet the goals established by the Red Cross. Greek leaders get sign-ups and schedule donors and volunteers in conjunction with Carnival during the fall semester and with Greek Week in the spring semester. At their most recent blood drive, 180 people donated blood.
“Greek students really enjoy coming out to support the Red Cross, and this award is really for all their hard work and compassion these last few years,” said Jamrozik. “This award celebrates their success as values-based organizations that understand the importance of service to others.”
