Gumberg Library Goes Mobile

Faculty and students returning to campus at Duquesne University can now access Gumberg Library resources from their iPhones, Android smartphones and other mobile devices.

The Gumberg Library's new site, Gumberg Mobile, provides access to traditional library resources and offers a glimpse into Gumberg’s future offerings as a contemporary academic library.

With Gumberg Mobile, accessing often-used library resources from both inside and outside the library building is easier than ever. The mobile version of DuCat, the Gumberg Library’s catalog, allows users to look up call numbers from any floor within the library. Students may access many resources even while on rotation in hospital or pharmacy settings. Answers to frequently asked questions about the library, including information about hours and programs, are available on the mobile site as well.

Through one of the library's most popular search interfaces, EBSCOhost, researchers can use databases optimized for mobile technology. In addition to the general database Academic Search Elite, databases in religion, history, business, education, psychology and philosophy are all available through the EBSCOhost link on the mobile site. Twenty-five databases are currently available, and the number of them providing interfaces optimized for mobile devices continues to grow.

“Beyond providing access to traditional library resources, the real potential of the library's mobile site lies in offering entirely new services,” said Rob Behary, systems librarian. “For example, the ‘contact us’ link provides a way for students to receive research assistance by sending a text message to a reference librarian. The RefWorks link allows researchers to carry a personalized bibliography with them wherever they go.”
