Local Priest’s Latest Book Examines 2,000 Years of Biblical Scholarship

In his 16th and latest book, The Interpretation of the Gospel of Luke, Volumes One and Two, Duquesne University Professor of Theology the Rev. Sean P. Kealy, C.S.Sp., offers the first detailed exploration of the Gospel of Luke from beginning to present day. The first volume focuses on Apostolic times through the 19th century, and the second volume explores the 20th century.

Published recently by The Edwin Mellen Press, the book has received accolades from renowned biblical scholars for its thorough exploration of 2,000 years of scholarly interpretations of the Book of Luke.

The two-volume book is the latest installment in what will likely be an eight-volume completed work closely examining the four books of the Gospel and their scholarly interpretations over two millennia. Kealy began the project because he felt there was a strong need for an in-depth account of Gospel scholarship.

“Nobody had ever done this before – or since – and you really need to look at the whole history. There has been scholarship in the church since the beginning, many wonderful scholars, and they should be put in perspective,” he said.

Kealy has been a full-time faculty member at Duquesne since 1995. A noted biblical scholar, he has published 16 books, as well as numerous articles and reviews, and taught in Europe, Africa and the United States. In 2003, he received the President’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship. He is currently working on the final volumes of the series, focusing on the Gospel of Mark.

The Interpretation of the Gospel of Luke, Volumes One and Two are available in Duquesne’s Gumberg Library, or for purchase at www.mellenpress.com. Kealy resides at Duquesne University.
