Bon Air Resident Named 2017 Emerging Teaching Scholar

Duquesne University Associate Pharmacology Professor Dr. Lauren O’Donnell is among just four academic pharmacy faculty in the nation to be named a 2017 Emerging Teaching Scholar Award recipient by the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP).

The AACP Council of Faculties Emerging Teaching Scholar Award recognizes excellence of academic pharmacy faculty engaged in and supporting scholarly teaching and learning.

“I am pleased and honored to receive this award,” O’Donnell said. “AACP has been an invaluable resource to me as a pharmacy educator, and their continued support has helped me to become a better teacher and advocate for pharmacy education.”

Nominees for the award must be full members of the AACP, have had three or more scholarly works accepted in peer-reviewed forums and be the first/primary author or creator of at least two scholarly works related to teaching and learning.

“As the pharmacy profession becomes increasingly competitive and dynamic, advocating for pharmacy education is important in preparing pharmacy students to be active contributors to the field,” added O’Donnell, who began teaching at Duquesne in 2010.

O’Donnell, whose current research interests focus on interactions between neurotropic viruses, infected neurons and infiltrating immune cells in the brain, has won several awards for her dedication to teaching, scholarship and service.

A resident of Bon Air, Pa., O’Donnell earned her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 2006 before becoming a postdoctoral fellow at the Fox Chase Cancer Center.

The mission of the AACP is to advance pharmacy education, research, scholarship, practice and service, in partnership with members and stakeholders, to improve health for all.
