Laws and Ethics of Independent Medical Exams Explored at Next Wecht Institute Seminar

The next Forensic Fridays seminar at Duquesne University continues with a look at the law and ethics surrounding independent medical examinations (IME), through which physicians or other clinicians not previously involved with an injured party's care are hired to determine cause and treatment for those injuries.

Hosted by the Cyril H. Wecht Institute of Forensic Science and Law, The Law and Ethics of Independent Medical Exams will be held on Friday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom of the Power Center.

Sponsored by local IME firm Tucker IME, the seminar will include presentations by Chief Medical Officer Jon Tucker and Chief Executive Office Eleanor McNulty. A panel of medical experts, including Dr. Cyril Wecht, will address a number of related IME case studies.

"Forensic medicine plays a major role in conducting IMEs," said Ben Wecht, administrator for the institute. "Our panel of medical and legal experts will examine a number of related questions about industry standards, doctor-patient relationships, causation and ethics as well as conduct a number of case studies to help attorneys, insurance adjusters and others better understand the issues at play."

The Forensic Fridays seminars are available both on site and online. The Law and Ethics of Independent Medical Exams is approved by the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Board for two hours of Substantive CLE credit and one hour of Ethics CLE credit.

Registrants are encouraged to send suggested case study topics to the institute prior to the seminar. To submit case studies, and to register and view a detailed list of speakers, visit, email or call 412.396.1330.
