Moonlit Burgers Launching Duquesne University Location
Pittsburgh hot spot Moonlit Burgers—home of the signature "smash burger"—is coming to Duquesne University this summer!
Thanks to a new partnership with Duquesne and Parkhurst Dining (which manages the University's dining and catering), Moonlit Burgers founders Derek Stevens and Mike McCoy will open a second location this August at the space previously occupied by The Red Ring on Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh's Uptown neighborhood. Their original location is on Potomac Avenue in Dormont.
"We're excited to welcome Moonlit Burgers to Duquesne University," said Matt Frist, senior vice president for finance and business. "With their proven success, delicious food offerings and cool restaurant atmosphere, we know that they'll appeal to our students, faculty and staff as well as the Pittsburgh community. We appreciate Parkhurst bringing a local brand like Moonlit Burgers to further strengthen our partnership and campus experience."
The restaurant at Duquesne will offer its full menu, including smash burgers, veggie burgers, fried chicken, milkshakes, local craft beers and soft serve from Pittsburgh's own Millie's Homemade Ice Cream.
"It's amazing that our little pop up, started during a pandemic, is growing into a second location in Uptown. We're really looking forward to a long-standing partnership with Duquesne and Parkhurst dining," said McCoy.
Stevens and McCoy, who met 18 years ago and have vast restaurant business experience, first made a splash with their signature smash burgers in 2020 through their popular Moonlit Burger pop-up all over the region.
"When we started Moonlit, our mission was simple-to bring tasty burgers at a reasonable price in a quick service atmosphere that is fun and relaxed," McCoy explained. "This next step will allow us to not only serve students and faculty of Duquesne, but also gives a chance to branch out to surrounding areas. You've got a friend in Smashburgh!"
Moonlit's Duquesne University space will feature a vibrant, eclectic and nostalgic design by architects Wildman Chalmers, graphic and branding design by Bear Left Bear, and works by local artists and craftsmen.
Founded in 1878, Duquesne is consistently ranked among the nation's top Catholic universities for its award-winning faculty and horizon-expanding education. A campus of nearly 8,500 graduate and undergraduate students, Duquesne prepares students by having them work alongside faculty to discover and reach their goals. The University’s academic programs, community service, and commitment to equity and opportunity in the Pittsburgh region have earned national acclaim.
