Newark Native Wins Duquesne University Creative Teaching Award
Dr. Lauren O'Donnell and her colleague Dr. Wilson Meng were recently honored at the annual Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) Celebration of Teaching Excellence at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
CTE presents the Creative Teaching Awards to Duquesne University faculty who use creativity and innovation in their teaching methods and demonstrate the effectiveness of their methods on student learning.
O'Donnell and Meng are both associate professors of pharmacology in the School of Pharmacy. They received a Creative Teaching Award for their project A Data-Mining Practicum for Enhancing Pharmacy Students' Understanding of the Impacts of Genes on Medications, which helps students decipher genetic and pharmacological complexities to deliver quality health care to patients.
The two professors developed a bioinformatics practicum that was designed to help students delineate interactions between genes and drugs. It was implemented into the second year of the professional pharmacy curriculum at Duquesne.
"We are honored that the University recognized this project and we are pleased that our pharmacy students have been able to gain valuable research experience by participating," said O'Donnell, who is a native of Newark, Del.
The CTE was founded in 1989 at Duquesne University to promote excellence in teaching at all levels, from beginning graduate teaching assistants to senior faculty scholars. Working collaboratively with faculty, the CTE utilizes University resources to create an educational culture that values and rewards teaching for the primary purpose of enhancing student learning.
Founded in 1878, Duquesne is consistently ranked among the nation's top Catholic universities for its award-winning faculty and horizon-expanding education. A campus of nearly 9,500 graduate and undergraduate students, Duquesne prepares students by having them work alongside faculty to discover and reach their goals. The University's academic programs, community service, and commitment to equity and opportunity in the Pittsburgh region have earned national acclaim.
