Western Beaver Senior Receives Mind, Heart and Spirit Award
Duquesne University has named Charles D. Hallam as a recipient of the Mind, Heart and Spirit Award, which acknowledges and promotes outstanding student athletes from local high schools.
Hallam, a senior from Western Beaver High School, is recognized for academics in the classroom, community service and exuding sportsmanship on the field. Ranked first out of 85 seniors, Hallam maintains a 4.70 grade point average with highest honors.
Hallam’s academic accomplishments include attending a summer program at Cambridge University in Cambridge England, where he studied British cultural history, quantum physics and quantum gravity. He also traveled to Baton Rouge, La., where he competed at the Academic Games League of America. His community service includes regularly tutoring younger students and volunteering at a local nursing home. Hallam is also a member of the Western Beaver football team, where, as a junior, the Big 7 coaching staff recognized him with an honorable mention for his position as offensive guard.
A native of Industry, Pa., Charles is the son of Charles Jr. and Rose Ann Hallam.
Mind, Heart and Spirit Award winners are announced at Steelers home games at Heinz Field. Seven honorees will be chosen during the 2006 season, and will receive prizes provided by Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network. One grand-prize winner selected from among the seven honorees will receive a $26,000 Duquesne University scholarship and on-field recognition by a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers organization. The Mind, Heart and Spirit Award is sponsored by Duquesne University, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Pittsburgh Steelers Radio Network.
