Elder and Palliative Care


Allentown Senior Citizen Center (Allentown)

Allentown Senior Citizen Center provides social recreation, meals, information and outreach for over age of 60 population.

Volunteers would assist in cleaning cupboards and garage area, help serve meals, socialization and recreation activities, along with general office duties.


AseraCare Hospice (Forest Hills/Eastern Suburbs)

AseraCare provides care and support for people with life threatening illnesses and their families. Their resources serve the emotional, physical and spiritual needs of patients.

Volunteers provide personal visits to patients who are terminally ill. Volunteers are also need to help with music/art/massage therapy. There is also a need for clerical office assistance. Groups could make gifts or cards, assist with the Thanksgiving Food Drive, or the Holiday Food and Gift Collection.


Bethel Animation Center (Spiritan Center) (South Hills)

Bethel Animation Center is a retreat center, as well as, a retirement center for the congregation of the Holy Spirit.

Volunteers will assist in yard work, painting (indoor and outdoor), and socializing with the retirees.


Elderly Housing Development and Operations Corporation

Volunteers are needed to teach older adults computers skills. 


Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh (Southside/Brookline/Troy Hill)

Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh is a 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to providing permanent homes to individuals with intellectual disabilities (developmental disabilities & mental retardation) and advocating for the public awareness of their needs.

Volunteers will provide companionship and mentorship to individuals and assist with housing projects.


Family Hospice & Palliative Care (Greater Pittsburgh Area)

Family Hospice is a not for profit hospice that provides services to all of Western Pennsylvania. Our mission is to provide compassion, quality comfort care that enhances the lives of people with a life limiting illness and their families.

Volunteers can help in two ways: First, is being compassionate with our patients and families and Second, is helping behind the scenes. Patient volunteering requires a training, office volunteering does not require training. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, Background Check, and Training.


Forbes Hospice (Oakland)

Forbes Hospice serves the end-of-life patient and their family members (all ages and all terminally ill).

Volunteers will assist in our 12 bed in-patient unit. Must be 18 yrs old, one hour orientation, TB Testing, and a criminal background check is required.

Harmony Hospice

Harmony Hospice is seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to provide supportive assistance to individuals with life limiting illnesses.  Volunteers are needed to provide patient companionship and caregiver respite.  Volunteers are needed to help in the office.  Friendly visits with patients and their families.  Requirements:  Orientation, 2 Part TB Test (paid by company), Background Check and Clearances.

Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers of SWPA (East Liberty)

IVC is a faith-based, nonsectarian program that serves older adults. Our mission is to maximize the independence and overcome the isolation of the frail elderly in Allegheny County.

Volunteers will assist clients in a variety of ways, including: friendly visiting; escort and transportation to appointments: grocery shopping; telephone reassurance; snow shoveling; home safety checks and help with correspondence, also receptionist duties and data entry clerk. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, Orientation, Background Check, Child Abuse Clearances.

LifeSpan, Inc. (Southern Allegheny County)

LifeSpan mission is to provide life transition management through education, support and advocacy that identifies options, fosters self-respect and is based on community and individual priorities for the 60 plus population. It is accountable to our consumers, our communities and our funding sources; and its services and programs are focused within Allegheny County and the surrounding regions.

Volunteers will assist in home deliver of meal packages, clerical duties, congregate meal servings, greeter and shopper. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, 2-day Orientation, and Act 33 Clearance required.


Life's Work of Western PA (Uptown)

Life's Work mission is to continue its comprehensive and innovative role of assisting persons with disabilities or other barriers to employment to achieve independence and dignity through productive employment opportunities.

Volunteers will assist with clerical duties, special events, marketing projects, data entry or work with our clients in the workshop, and physical labor around the building. Pre-requisite: Clearances are required.


Little Sisters of the Poor (Brighton Heights)

Little Sisters of the Poor cares for the elderly poor in a spirit of humble service. Welcoming them as we would Jesus Christ himself and serve them with love and respect until death.

Volunteers would assist in serving the residents meals, transporting residents to and from places within the home, help with garden work, cleaning projects, various activities with the residents and secretarial duties. Pre-requisite: Orientation, Background Check, Training in understanding and respecting our mission.


Lutheran Service Society (Babcock Blvd)

Lutheran Service Society is a social ministry organization and provider of social services that enhance the quality of life and promote the dignity and independence of persons in need. These services include meals on wheels, senior centers, affordable senior housing, children and family services and more.

Volunteers will assist in many different areas including: preparing or delivering meals on wheels, spending time at the senior centers or affordable senior housing units, also assisting in office duties. Orientation will be given.


Oasis (Downtown)

Oasis is a non-profit organization that offers cultural, educational and informational based services for adults 50 years old and over.

Volunteers would assist in press releases, flyer distribution, making telephone calls, assist in the set-up of rooms, organize course materials and more.


Passavant Retirement Community

Passavant Retirement Community is a faith-based, non-profit organization which serves over 600 residents in independent, assisted living and nursing.  Our mission is based on John 10:10. Striving to help all seniors enjoy an abundant life. Activities consist of maintenance projects, meal assistance, off-site collections.  Also have an on-site TV station and welcome an on-site TV production for residents on documentary.  Requirements:  Orientation,  and a TB Test


Prime Time Adult Care (Bethel Park)

Prime Time Adult Care offers medical supervision, mental and physical stimulation to the frail elderly, those with functional disabilities and/or those with Alzheimer's Disease and dementia. Open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

Students can assist our clients with different activities throughout the day (all led by our own Activity Leader) - sitting and talking with the clients.


St. Barnabas Nursing Home (Gibsonia)

St. Barnabas is a non-denominational, non-profit nursing home. Our mission focuses on providing skilled, compassionate care to all those in need regardless of payment source.

Volunteers would escort residents to bingo, crafts, birthday parties and other programs. Programs can be designed to assist the volunteers needs.


Sunrise of South Hills (Greentree/Scott Township)

Sunrise of South Hills is a home-like environment with a nurturing Spirit for the elderly it fosters individuality, encourages independence, enables freedom of choice, preserves dignity, to the elderly of the community.

Volunteers will assist in balloon volleyball, calling or helping with Bingo, escorting residents to entertainment activities, church, etc. Help serve water and juice in the dining area at meal time. Pre-requisite: Must be 18 yrs, Orientation, Background Check and TB shot.


Trinity Hospice (Forest Hills)

Trinity Hospice is a community based organization that affirms the belief that it is important to make every life as meaningful as possible, from the first days of a life-limiting illness to the last.

Volunteers will assist with direct patient care such as talking, assisting them, knitting and crocheting lap quilts for our patients, bereavement phone calls, calling our low level risk families. Pre-requisite: Training, Drug and TB test paid for by Trinity. 


Vincentian Collaborative System (VCS) (Greentree, McCandless and Stanton Heights)

 VCS is a Catholic not-for-profit health care and human services organization providing a continuum of care for seniors that includes independent living to personal care to skilled nursing and rehabilitation. Vincentian also operates a charitable foundation and two child care centers.


Activity, companionship, hospitality, indirect service and spiritual care volunteers nurture and sustain a ministry of compassionate care to residents and clients. VCS also offers meaningful project-based, group volunteer, and event volunteer opportunities.
