Youth Programs


Alliance for Infants and Toddlers Inc. (South Hills)

Alliance for Infants and Toddlers, Inc. is an organization that coordinates and monitors the delivery of services to children with developmental delays throughout Allegheny County.

Recognizing a volunteers commitment to addressing community needs, any assistance that could be provided in this area would be greatly appreciated. Seeking volunteers to sponsor a toy drive for the children of the program.


Auberle for Children and Families (Mon-Valley/McKeesport)

Auberle's mission is one of caring and healing for abused, neglected,  troubled children and families throughout Western PA to heal themselves.  Since 1952 it has helped thousands of children and their families through the residential care, foster care, emergency shelter and educational programs.

Volunteers are needed for tutoring and mentoring for math and reading. Groups are in need of "soft skills" coaching, how to interview, dress for an interview, clerical work, GED tutors, visit with a child or could do games and activities nightly, monthly birthday parties, and assist with several special events. This organization asks you to share any individual talents or gifts with their children.


Big Brothers Big Sisters (Office located in East Liberty)

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the nations pre-eminent youth service organization and has been for over a century.

Volunteers are needed for college-aged students to serve as school-based mentors. This is a commitment for the entire academic year.


Boys & Girls Club of Western PA (Various Locations)

Boys & Girls Club is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for youth ages 5 to 18 and to promote their social, physical, educational and vocational development. Provides programs and services to children and youth.

Volunteers are needed to assist in after school programs, sports and athletic leagues, special intranet groups and with various special events. Pre-requisite: Must be over 18 yrs of age, training and Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances.


Bradley Center (Robinson Township)

Bradley is a social and human service agency providing out of home behavioral healthcare for children ranging in ages 7 to 18.

Small groups are needed to help at one of three facilities serving children and youth with mental, emotional and developmental disabilities. Projects could include outdoor landscaping or painting, helping out with a craft or intramural activity.


Career Literacy for the Advancement of all Youth (CLAAY) (Allegheny/Beaver Counties)

CLAAY provides high school students that are in the invisible middle with career information, activities, and guidance that help students to realize their future career goals. Students will have the tools needed to shape their career futures and the economic future of Southwestern Pennsylvania.

Volunteers will assist on a one-to-one mentoring and academic support programs with high school students, which also addresses current homework and classroom needs. Pre-requisite: 3 hour training, Criminal Background Check is required.


CASA of Allegheny County (Court Appointed Special Advocates) (Downtown Hill District)

CASA's Mission is to ensure that every child has a safe, supportive and permanent home by providing volunteer advocacy for the best interest of abused and neglected children within the child welfare system. We have 170 volunteers who in 2007 served 400 abused and neglected children.

Volunteers will be paired with a case management worker of abused and/or neglected child in the Juvenile Court System. CASA volunteers gather information about the child that will help them to advocate in the best interest of the child while in court. Volunteers must be 21. Also volunteers are needed for special events held throughout the year. Required clearances are needed Act 33/34 and 40 hours of training.


Children's Rooms in the Courts

We are a project of the National Council of Jewish women. We provide a safe, stress-free haven for children while their parents or caregiver is attending to court business. The children range in age from newborn to teens.

Volunteers will be playing with children, reading stories, playing games, doing art projects, etc. Pre-requisite: 18 years of age, Orientation, Training, Background Check and Child Abuse Clearance.


Collegiate YMCA (Oakland/Uptown)

Collegiate YMCA's goal is to solve the problems closest to home or better yet, to prevent them before they begin. You can make a positive change to support our community.

Volunteers would be a student leader, your time and talent goes along way. You can lead a program, serve as a role model or tutor young people, participate in special events, raise money or an internship. Pre-requisite: Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance are required.


Community Human Services Corporation (Oakland)

Community Human Services is a community based human services organization serving the homeless, those with mental illness, children and families, seniors and those with health needs.

Volunteers will assist in the after school program, marketing strategies for the agency, and creating an interface with students in the neighborhood. Pre-requisite: Background Check and Child Abuse Clearance.


CONTACT Pittsburgh (Blawnox/Fox Chapel)

CONTACT Pittsburgh is an immediate emotional support facility staffed by volunteers trained to be telephone crisis line specialists to help people of all ages who may be in distress.

Volunteers will be trained to work on the emergency telephone hotline to assist individuals and families in need.


Crisis Center North (Perrysville)

Crisis Center North provides resources for those who are victims of domestic violence.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks at this domestic violence counseling and referral center. Activities include clerical work, fundraising, direct support to clients, legal or medical advocate, and many more.


DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (Shadyside)

DePaul School was founded in 1908 by the Diocese of Pittsburgh and the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, DePaul School for Hearing and Speech has been providing quality auditory oral education for children who are deaf or hard of hearing for nearly 100 years. Following the values and traditions of our founders, the mission is to teach each child who is deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Our children enter the educational mainstream with the foundation to succeed.

Volunteers are needed to assist with one-time fundraising projects throughout the year.


Doorway, Inc. (Avalon/Bellevue/Ben Avon)

Doorway, Inc. is a crisis ministry, handling many areas of crisis, including a prevention recreation room with a soda fountain and television studio.

Volunteers will assist in cleaning, cooking, computers, office duties, working with the kids, delivering food, unloading food and shopping for food. Pre-requisite: Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance and a brief meeting prior to volunteering.

Early Learning Institute, The (Greentree/South Hills)

Early Learning Institute's mission is to help developmentally delayed children birth to five years old to learn their full potential through comprehensive programs of therapy and education in an all-inclusive environment.

Volunteers will assist teachers in the pre-school centers and fundraising events. Pre-requisite: Child Abuse and Act 33 clearances, and TB test are required.


Family Activity Center, The @ the Allegheny County Jail

Family Activity Center is a waiting area in the jail lobby where kids can prepare for visiting their incarcerated parent(s).

Volunteers can assist in reading, crafts, building blocks, and conversation. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, Orientation, Training period, Background Check, and Child Abuse Clearances are required.


Girl Scouts (Trillium Council)

Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's pre-eminent organization dedicated solely to girls-all girls- where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world.

Opportunities are available for volunteers to assist with indoor and outdoor programs with girls, camp preparation projects are also available. There is also a need for help with office projects. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age and training.


Girls Hope of Pittsburgh (Baden)

Girls Hope is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping academically capable and motivated children-in-need to meet their full potential and become women for others by providing value-centered, family-like homes, opportunities and education through college.

Volunteers are needed to tutor students, prepare and share dinner with the scholars, become a walking partner, clerical duties, help organize and execute birthday and holiday celebrations, or anything else that may motivate the scholars socially and/or academically. Pre-requisite: Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances, Act 33/34, minimal training.


Healthy Teens, Inc./Teen Oasis (Monroeville/Pitcairn)

Healthy Teens provide a safe, supervised, drug/alcohol, and tobacco free environment for local teens to engage in healthy recreation and after school activities.

Volunteers are needed to tutor, mentor and help to run programs and activities for children ages 12 thru 18, and fundraising events. Pre-requisite: Child Abuse Clearances.


Kidsvoice (Downtown)

Kidsvoice advocates in court and the community to ensure a safe and permanent home for abused, neglected and at-risk children. We serve children birth to 21 years of age. Children become kidsvoice clients when a dependency proceeding begins in court. Each year we serve over 500 children.

Volunteers would assist in the development department by printing and assembling year end mailings, staff our kidsvoice booth at various events from Sept to March (helping kids do crafts, handing out balloons and stickers) etc. and helping with two spring events (doing activities with children, serving on our event committee, setup, registration, volunteer coordination. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, Orientation, Background Check, Child Abuse Clearances.

Nabhi Christian Ministries (NCM) (Lincoln Lemington)

Nabhi Christian Ministries is a non-profit faith-based organization dedicated to enhancing impoverished communities by reducing havoc and creating healthy environments through a provision of services that mentor, train and develop quality citizens of all ages. NCM has targeted at risk youth ages 12-18 for over ten years to reduce violence of the possibility of high risk youth starting or continuing delinquent behaviors.

Volunteers would assist in organizing the community library (on-site) , inventory and check-out system. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs of age, training, Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances (Act 33 & 34).


Outreach Teen and Family Services (Mt. Lebanon)

Outreach is a community resource for young people and their families, fostering emotionally healthy teens by providing counseling and educational programs in a welcoming and supportive environment. It provides professional, confidential and affordable counseling to young people between 12 and 21 and their families.

Volunteers will assist in fundraising events, various marketing and clerical duties. Pre-requisite: Act 33/34 clearances.


Sarah Heinz House (Northside)

Sarah Heinz House is a boys and girls club. We have approximately 800 members between the ages of 6 & 17 years old. We have a diverse membership, every member attends twice a week a club (social) and gym/swim program. In addition, we offer over 80 extra programs that the members can participate in at a very reasonable cost.

Volunteers would be with children as an assistant or run a program if they were qualified, they would serve as a monitor of all areas or help us with moving and cleaning days. Pre-requisite: Orientation, Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances are required.

Schenley Heights Community Development Program

Schenley Heights Community Development Program's mission is to develop, nurture and support youth.  The target population is at risk youth and provides tutoring, social support for ages 3-18.

Volunteers needed to tutor, mentor and classroom assistance.  Requirements:  Orientation, Background Check and Child Abuse/Criminal Clearances.


SciTech is a year-round initiative of exciting experiences for all ages. Events feature Pittsburgh growth areas: Biotechnology, IT, Robotics, Advance Materials Processes, Environmental Technology, and Nanotechnology - connect visitors with leading scientists and technologists in a fun kynamic atmosphere.

School programs are designed for middle and high school audiences and have clear links to Pennsylvania education standards and anchors. 


Special Olympics of Allegheny County (Heidelberg)

Special Olympics of Allegheny County provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with mental retardation. Their are 20 training sites throughout Allegheny County for over 1,400 special olympic athletes.

Volunteers may assist at training sites, or as a day of event staff volunteer. There is also a need for assistance in the office with professional work.


Shuman Juvenile Detention Center (Lincoln-Lemington)

Shuman Detention Center is a center for youths (10-20) awaiting court proceedings. The center's mission is to provide safe, secure custody and to promote the health and well being of youths committed to its care. It aims to create an environment that promotes social, emotional, intellectual and physical development.

Volunteers would assist with mentoring, arts and crafts, prepare mailings, recreation activities and special events. Pre-requisite: Must be 21 yrs old, Orientation (one hour), Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances (Act 33/34).


Three Rivers Youth (North Side)

Three Rivers Youth has worked with abused, neglected, at-risk, homeless and runaway youths and their families for over 125 years. As the second oldest organization in the nation to care for children of color, we embrace our responsibility to advance professional practices and benchmark therapeutic outcomes for our clients through model and innovative programming and services. Last year TRY served 4,000 youths and families. The mission is to strengthen youths and families struggling with poverty, despair, and violence so that they may change their lives and gain hope for the future.

Volunteers may serve as a tutor, a mentor , a chaperone for on campus day, beautifying a TRY program site, providing administrative support. Pre-requisite: Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances, Orientation, complete drug screening.


Tyler Youth Group, The (Aliquippa/Beaver County)

Tyler Youth Group is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to develop and implement programs and activities that meet the needs and interest of our kids and teens in Beaver County. We are group of concerned parents and individuals. Our mission is to teach kindergarten through 12th graders that there is hope in this world and teach them about health and drug related issues and to show them that they can have a future.

Volunteers will assist in the Marching Band, Softball Team for girls, help with other games, health programs and helping them with public service. Pre-requisite: 18 yrs, Training Period, Background Check and Child Abuse Clearances.


Urban Youth Action, Inc. (Downtown Pittsburgh)

UYA is an organization that empowers young people to develop positive life and leadership skills by connecting learning to the world of work and the pursuit of post-secondary education.

Volunteers will assist in tutoring (all subjects) and technology tasks. chief operations, contracts, youth development, curriculum development, education, financial literacy and entreprenuership. Pre-requisite: Background Check, Child Abuse Clearances and FBI (certain positions) check.


Variety the Children's Charity (Robinson Township)

VCC ensures that every child with a disability is provided with enabling equipment, assisting technology and communication devices, and the opportunity to personally develop and to participate in social, educational, artistic, and recreational activities enjoyed by other children.

Volunteers will assist in activities which include holiday parties, social and recreational activities, and a variety of fundraising special events.


YMCA of Pittsburgh (Uptown)

YMCA of Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization that helps to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.

Volunteers are needed to assist with special events throughout the year such as: greeters, packet pickup, holiday events, painting, cleaning storage area.
