The Administrative Policies

TAP NO. 14: HOLIDAYS/HOLY DAYS FOR ADMINISTRATIVE/PROFESSIONAL AND SUPPORT EMPLOYEES

Scope

This policy applies to all full-time non-represented, non-temporary staff employees.

Purpose

This policy identifies recognized University holidays and holy days of obligation and describes the manner in which employees will be paid.

I. Regular Holidays

A. The University observes eight regular holidays for which full-time employees are not required to work (except those necessary to maintain essential services).

B. Any holiday which falls on a Saturday is observed on the preceding Friday. With the exception of Easter, any holiday which falls on a Sunday is observed on the following Monday.

C. The recognized regular holidays are as follows:

1. New Year's Day
2. Good Friday
3. Easter
4. Memorial Day
5. Independence Day
6. Labor Day
7. Thanksgiving Day
8. Christmas Day

D. Full-time, non-exempt, hourly paid employees who are required to work on a regular holiday will be paid time and one-half their base hourly rate and will be given an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

E. Full-time, Administrative/Professional, salaried employees required to work on any of the regular holidays will receive an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

II. Holy Days of Obligation and Authorized Holidays

A. The University observes various holy days of obligation and authorized holidays for which full-time employees are not required to work (except those necessary to maintain essential services) when the holiday falls on a regularly scheduled work day.

B. The recognized holy days of obligation and authorized holidays are as follows:

1. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
2. Holy Thursday
3. Holy Saturday
4. All Saints Day
5. The Friday following Thanksgiving
6. The last regularly scheduled working day before Christmas
7. The last regularly scheduled working day before New Year's Day

C. Full-time, non-exempt, hourly paid employees who are required to work on any of the holy days of obligation or authorized holidays observed by the University will be paid at their regular hourly rate and receive an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

D. Full-time, Administrative/Professional, salaried employees required to work on any of the holy days of obligation or authorized holidays observed by the University will receive an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

III. Special Authorized Holidays

A. The University may provide additional holidays, which are referred to as special authorized holidays, for which full-time employees are not required to work (except those necessary to maintain essential services) when the holiday falls on a regularly scheduled work day.

B. Special Authorized holidays may only be approved by the President.

C. Full-time, non-exempt, hourly paid employees who are required to work on special authorized holidays observed by the University will be paid at their regular hourly rate and receive an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

D. Full-time, Administrative/Professional, salaried employees required to work on special authorized holidays observed by the University will receive an additional day of paid (compensatory) vacation.

IV. Use of Compensatory Vacation Days

A. All compensatory vacation days earned should be used as soon as reasonably possible and must be used within the employee's employment anniversary cycle.

V. Payment in Lieu of Receiving a Compensatory Vacation Days

A. Senior Department Heads have the option to provide payment in lieu of an additional day of paid compensatory vacation for full-time, hourly paid employees. Payment requires funding to be available from the department budget and divisional vice president approval.

B. Full-time, Administrative/Professional salaried employees who earn compensatory vacation do not have an option to receive payment for time worked.

C. Compensatory vacation days will not be paid out upon termination of employment.

Violations of this policy will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and are subject to formal disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
