"Health Management Systems is a unique major focused on giving students a balanced understanding of clinical knowledge, information technology, and healthcare business management; that will prepare them for any of the many career paths that they choose."
I am a May 2014 graduate with a B.S. in Health Management Systems. The program's "Theory to Practice" approach helps students to take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the field. In addition, the many speakers that come in and the group projects assigned offer an insight of what lies ahead after graduation. Professor Cousino and Dr. Kiel are experts in the field and great resources for students.
While at Duquesne, I served as a Resident Assistant for two years in the Duquesne Towers Residence Hall and was a two year member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity, serving one year as their Vice President. Prior to graduation, I interned with Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center as an Eligibility Specialist in the eligibility department; and at MedCom Solutions, Inc. as a Business Analyst compiling and organizing data to be used for Chargemaster Reviews and Order Entry Mapping Audits.
I am currently working as a Managed Care Analyst for Bottom Line Systems, Inc. since August 2014. Bottom Line Systems is a payment compliance vendor dedicated to assuring that their clients are fully, fairly and accurately paid for enhancing and saving the lives of their patients.
I work closely with the Allegheny Health Network employees as a third party consultant in their Revenue Cycle Operations department. I audit health insurance claims in an effort to find existing underpayments and work with various insurance companies to collect money for the Health Network that would otherwise be lost due to registration, coding, clinical, and administrative errors.
I am very thankful for the great experiences that I have had while at Duquesne. I owe my success to the skills that I learned as a Health Management Systems student, the dedicated and knowledgeable teaching staff, the strong contacts that the school has, and the large network of Duquesne alumni who are willing to give back.
