Living on campus is an important way for all students to engage, learn, belong and thrive in their first year on the Bluff.  In addition to the benefits of living on campus that all students experience, we have distinct communities designed for your academic, career goals or your specific interests.

Residence Hall

Living Learning Communities

LLCs are designed for students who share the same academic major or field of study. Through faculty mentorship, shared classes, academic programming and learning experiences, you will deepen understanding in your future profession while building strong peer networks with students in your major or field of study. If you choose to live in a Living Learning Community you will live in one of the Duquesne Towers or Assumption Hall. You can learn more about the LLC options below.

Themed Communities

Themed Communities focus on creating fun, engaging experiences beyond the classroom, including social events, hands-on activities, and opportunities to explore your passions in new and exciting ways. Whether you’re building friendships, discovering new hobbies, or creating unforgettable memories, this one-of-a-kind experience supports your journey every step of the way. If you choose to live in a Themed Community you will live in one of the Duquesne Towers. You can learn more about our three Themed Community options below.

How to Choose a Community?

A Housing Option for First-Year Students

Living Learning Communities: Living Learning Communities are designed for first year students who share the same academic major or field of study. To choose to live in one of these communities you must first be accepted into the communities specific major or academic program and then preference this community type in your Housing Agreement. 

Themed Communities: Themed communities are not tied to a specific academic major and do not have programs you need to be involved in before joining the community. All first-year students interested in choosing a certain community will preference that community in their Housing Agreement. 

All community requests Are made in the housing agreement. You can view the agreement with the link above

  • Step #1: Select your community preference in the Housing Agreement​
  • Step #2: The Office of Student Housing and Residence Life will verify that you meet any program requirements
  • Step #3: Assignments will be made based on availability, date of application, and your roommate preference ​
  • Step #4: You will be notified early July of your community and room assignment. Based on housing capacity you may be added to a waitlist for a certain community

Unique Experiences for All Community Residents

Living Learning Communities: Living Learning Communities are directly tied to an academic program or specific major. All LLC members will share a minimum of two academic courses along with living in a specific location on campus. 

  • Shared living environment with peers in your classes and major or those who share your interests and goals.
  • Peer mentors, Success Coaches, advisors, and faculty members in your academic school or program actively involved in the community.  
  • Exclusive study groups and tutoring sessions. 
  • Enriching social and networking activities that bring your studies to life.

 Themed Communities: Themed Communities are built on partnerships between the Office of Student Housing and Residence Life and other offices or initiatives at Duquesne. Students will not share academic courses but will work together on projects and share experiences while living together. 

  • Meaningful events and experiences designed around your community theme.
  • Mentors and peers that live with you and share interest in your community theme.
  • Campus partners and student organizations actively involved in your community.

An Opportunity for Mentors and Peers to Walk Alongside You Outside of the Classroom

College of Liberal Arts LLC

All first-year students in McAnulty College of Liberal Arts, will be a part of a Residential Learning Community and are invited to live in a community designated LLC. Each Learning Community cohort takes two thematically-related courses together in the fall semester.

School of Nursing LLC

Designed exclusively for first-year nursing students, this supportive residential program fosters both academic and social success. Residents of the community will share 5 academic courses, exclusive studying and tutoring opportunities, and fun networking and social events.

Honors Program LLC

If you meet the academic requirements, you will be invited to join the Honors Program and the Honors LLC in Assumption Hall. Regardless of your major, you will delve deeper into literature, history, philosophy, theology, music, arts and other humanities fields while in the Honors Program and LLC.

Global

Through engaging programs, cultural immersion experiences, and access to global resources, residents in the Global Community build cross-cultural understanding and develop skills for thriving in an interconnected world. Students interested in different cultures and studying abroad should choose this housing option in their first year on the Bluff.

Sustain

Residents in the Sustain Community enjoy access to specialized resources, dynamic events, and collaborative opportunities that integrate sustainability practices into their daily lives and academic pursuits. By blending education, service, and advocacy, the community equips students with the tools to lead and inspire change, both on campus and beyond.

Rooted in the belief that wellness is key to personal and academic success, this community provides resources, programs, and a supportive environment to empower students to cultivate a balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. Residents will engage in activities that promote self-awareness, resilience, and well-being, fostering habits that will benefit them throughout their college journey and beyond.
