How does the program work?

The Mary Pappert School of Music has many talented alumni as well as current student musicians who can be hired for events such as weddings, worship services, receptions, dinners, business events, and concerts. Members of the program must undergo an annual review process in which musicians are required to submit a current sample of their musical work via a media link in addition to updating any artist information. Solo musicians as well as musical groups and ensembles are welcome to join. Only approved members are visible on the Musicians List.

What needs to be considered before selecting a musician or musical group?

All approved musicians and musical groups listed have a profile that includes a bio or description as well as sample music media and a contact button. When reviewing profiles, be sure to consider the venue parameters and limitations as well as desired outcomes. How many people are attending? Is the performance indoors? What kind of mood is being cast? For many situations, a soloist is sufficient or at least a great place to start, and they can often provide advice and feedback regarding any additional needs or considerations for the event.

Who is responsible for making arrangements?

All logistics related to a performance engagement are the sole responsibility of the hired musician. This includes:

  • Travel and transportation
  • Equipment and setup
  • Dress code and attire
  • Rehearsals and sound checks
  • Performance timing and flow
  • Meals, accommodations, and any other special arrangements

The School of Music and the university do not assume any liability for issues that arise between musicians and event organizers. Musicians are expected to proactively discuss and confirm all logistical details directly with the hiring party. Musicians are free to accept or decline any paid performance opportunity.

What are the musician rates and how is compensation handled?

All musicians listed are independent artists who have the right to set their own performance rates. The Mary Pappert School of Music does not coordinate, negotiate, or guarantee rates or compensation for any performance engagements arranged through the program. Musicians are responsible for determining their own rates based on factors such as:

  • Length and complexity of the performance
  • Rehearsal and preparation time
  • Travel and setup requirements
  • Ensemble size and instrumentation

Rates are not published. Instead, they must be negotiated directly between the musician (or group) and the event organizer or venue. All payment arrangements, including amounts, methods, and timing, must be agreed upon by the hiring party and the musician or ensemble. The School of Music and the university are not involved in issuing or collecting payment and assume no responsibility for financial disputes or non-payment.

NOTE: A two-hour minimum is often appropriate (even for shorter performances) to account for preparation and logistical effort.
