Impact ANYWHERE

In our School of Education we prepare you to make an impact in any classroom, expanding your horizons across the U.S. and overseas with cultural immersion experiences.

Student Teaching Abroad

Expand your horizons and experience student teaching in a different country. As a Duquesne University School of Education student, you have the opportunity to be placed in an overseas student teaching experience in one of 21 countries through our partnership with Indiana University's Global Gateway for Teachers Program. Contact our Office of Student Teaching and Field Placement to learn more.

Prior to student teaching abroad, you will fulfill locally the Pennsylvania Department of Education requirements for student teaching. Our Director of Student Teaching and Field Placement will work  alongside you to help you prepare your application materials to be submitted to IU Global Gateway.

Maymester Program

If you'd like a shorter commitment, you can experience hands-on teaching opportunities in the United States and abroad through our unique Maymester program. Earn six academic credits while exploring a different culture with your Duquesne School of Education faculty and classmates.

Navajo Nation Experience

Most recently, our Duquesne University students spent three weeks in Newcomb, New Mexico, as part of the Navajo Nation Program. Students learned first hand about culturally-relevant teaching practices from teachers and students in the Tohaali Community School and engaged in co-planning STEM and outdoor-based learning activities. View photos from the 2023 trip.

This two-and-a-half week program guided students as they explored how and why access to STEM is an essential component of education in schools in Indigenous communities.

Student Teaching Abroad Perspective

Education major Maggie Fertal abroad

My favorite parts about student teaching abroad were learning the different curriculum and school routines, connecting with the teachers and teaching students from diverse backgrounds. Duquesne provides so many unique field experiences in different types of schools and communities.
